Last night of my long weekend before back to school tomorrow, how exciting. But the main point of my post today is to mark a great accomplishment/achievement, whatever, yesterday. For the first time in my 17 years of life.

The day I "cooked" my/my brother's first lunch

Sunday was the day where for the first time, in 17 years of my life, I made my own lunch. It was also the day where I first learnt how to operate a microwave. Everyone was out to China so it was just me and my brother left at home. We woke up at noon and then after an hour, I decided to have lunch. I went into the kitchen and looked into the freezer compartment where I found some microwave spaghetti. Then I was thinking, "instant noodles or microwave?" I stood there fora few minutes weighing up the pros and cons - Instant noodles requires a pot of water over the stove which I have no idea how to operate, not to mention, fire. So, there, I decided then to use the microwave. And here goes my short but painful journey towards learning the basics of the microwave.
First step - opening the microwave door. Where the hell is the damn "open" button? Oh, apparently it was right below all the other list of buttons, this odd looking clicky shaped thing. I took the noodles out and placed them into the microwave and then looked at all the buttons - defrost, dinner, pastries, reheat, etc. Oh wow, why can't they just make three simple buttons "Stop" "Start" "Timer". So I decided to click reheat and set it to 4 minutes and clicked start. It wouldn't start. I tried it again. It wouldn't start. Okay, so it wasn't as easy as I thought. Then I tried other random buttons and then start, it wouldn't work. What? So then I decided to skype video call Vivien and Joycelyn who proved to be no help at all, other than laughing at my incompetence and failed attempt to start the microwave.

Then I moved to googling which didn't prove to be much of a help either and by then, I was already getting quite frustrated, mainly because I was stuck in the kitchen with a frozen noodle pack in the microwave, burning hot with no fan or anything, for 15 minutes. And then I thought of something genius - call my helper. And of course the plan failed when she didn't pick up my call. It was like being stuck o remote island in the middle of nowhere with only a coconut in your hand. You can't open it but you want to eat/drink it.

By then I was already pretty annoyed with the whole situation so I just randomly clicked the "dinner" button and clicked start and wala, it worked! It felt amazing that after 15, 20 minutes of trying to operate the damn thing (Where are the manuals when you need them?!) I can finally reheat my food to eat. It was set 7 minutes but apparently I think I only needed 4 so I stopped it when there was 2 minutes left and took it out. The problem then was finding the damn hand muffs which were hidden in the huge kitchen somewhere. After a minute or 2, I found it, stashed away behind all the snacks on the rack. Waallaaaaa, I could finally eat.

I did the same with my brother's food and then he handled it himself. After that, I washed up my dish and went back to tumblring. Oh joy, I can now live for a day without anyone at home. I swear, that damn microwave is not for the first timers in the kitchen. The number of options and buttons on that machine is insane but hey, proof that I am a genius and that I managed to figure it out all by myself.

So that marks the end of my first "cooking" experience. A great sense of accomplishment I have not felt in a looooong time. I might just try out the instant noodles the next time I'm left in the house again. Might.
And I believe I forgot to mention, my rents' and everyone in the Tang family, oh boy they were proud.
